Israeli med-tech company Mazor Robotics unveiled its new guidance platform for spine surgeries Mazor X. the new system is already approved by the American FDA, and can be freely distributed in the US.

Mazor’s new system includes a suite of software-based tools designed to pre-operatively assess spinal alignment and implement full surgical planning, facilitating a total patient treatment strategy. A key component of Pre-Op Analytics, the X-Align module, is a combination of biomechanical logic and virtual surgical tools with computerized alignment calculations, intended to streamline the process of creating a holistic alignment plan for each patient.

The new system Utilizes precision mechanics and a bed-attached, bone-mounted surgical arm to guide surgical tools and synergistic implants according to the Pre-Op Analytics. Coupled with innovative tracking and imaging, Intra-operative Guidance effects predictable execution of the surgical plan. Another feauture of the new system is Real-Time 3D Verification: The Mazor X System’s real-time verification allows surgeons to close the surgical loop and confirm – execution and reconciliation of the surgical plan using proprietary 2D fluoroscopy-based technology, visual tracking, or intraoperative imaging systems.

“Mazor X is the culmination of a multi-year development effort to proactively address our target market, surgeon and patient needs for today’s reimbursement environment, by applying multi-disciplinary principles to achieve a Surgical Assurance platform,” commented Ori Hadomi, Chief Executive Officer. “Our pioneering experience in guidance technology, which has been used by hundreds of surgeons to place over 100,000 guided spine implants, has been leveraged in the development of the Mazor X system.”

On the threshold of a major breakthrough

Mazor’s new system enjoyed commercial success even before it was unveiled – Mazor’s strategic partner American medical device giant Medtronic has placed an order for 15 Mazor X systems for $20 million. This purchase is part of an agreement signed between the two companies in March. The agreement has three phases, the first of includes the purchase of 15 systems by Medtronic – this phase is now completed, strengthening confidence in the successful fulfillment of the next phases, which could result in a surge in sales for Mazor.

The importance of the agreement cannot be underestimated – in Q1 2015 Mazor sold only 5 Renaissance robot-assisted spinal guidance systems. In the first phase of the agreement alone, Medtronic buys 15 such systems, to be distributed by the Irish giant in the USA. But future possibilities are huge: Medtronic controls 30% of the American spinal surgery market, estimated value of $7 billion a year. If the agreement will be fulfilled fully, Mazor will produce hundreds of such systems for Medtronic.
