Assaf Katan was appointed this week as Acting Chief Executive Officer of Alvarion, a provider of wireless broadband solutions. Katan stepped in following the resignation of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Hezi Lapid, a couple of weeks ago.

Mr. Katan joined Alvarion in 2010 as part of the corporate development team and was subsequently appointed Corporate Vice President, Strategy & Business Development.

He has been involved in the company’s major strategic initiatives, including the acquisition of Wavion Ltd. in November 2011, for $30 million. This acquisition expanded Alvarion’s portfolio to include carrier Wi-Fi, and  played important role in the turnaround plan launched in mid-2012, which included a decision to focus on vertical and carrier-grade Wi-Fi markets.

Prior to joining Alvarion, Mr. Katan served as Vice President, Marketing and Business Development at Media Layers, a mobile advertising company. Before Media Layers, he held various business development positions at Comverse, where, among others, he initiated and led the company’s entry into the mobile content domain.

Once a leading player in the global WiMAX technology market, Alvarion struggle today to find its place in carrier-grade Wi-Fi market. In the fourth quarter of 2012, revenues were $8.2 million, a decrease of 25.4% from $10.9 million in the third quarter of 2012, and a decrease of 59.1% from $19.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2011. Annual Revenues for 2012 totaled $50 million, a 30.9% decrease compared to 2011.
