Coilcraft New eBook: The Fundamentals of RF Inductors

Coilcrafr, The US-based designer and manufacturer of high-performance magnetic components (including RF chip inductors, power magnetics and filters), has published a new eBook: The Fundamentals of RF Inductors. This eBook covers the fundamental of RF inductors – from the basic question of, “what is an inductor” up through specific applications and different types of RF inductors. It includes guides and technical articles on the major technologies and RF applications of inductors.

Following basic introduction about inductors, and how these components are used in electronic devices, the eBook includes a variety of technical articles that address topics such as solving RF isolation issues with RF inductors, what is a Conical Inductor and how to use it, understanding Inductors as RF Chokes, comparing the benefits of wirewound ferrite beads to traditional chip ferrite beads, and designing LC filters with Coilcraft reference designs and software.

US-based Coilcraft has introduced new families of transformers and power inductors for aerospace, military and other highly-critical applications. The AE458RFW Series are Miniature wideband transformers, that are re specially designed and tested to meet or exceed NASA’s demanding low-outgassing specifications. With 300  V inter-winding isolation and ¼ watt RF input power capability, they are well suited to a broad range of applications.

CPS AE458RFW Series offers a full-rated ambient temperature range of -55°C to +105°C, with unlimited floor life at <30°C/85 percent relative humidity. It provides high current capacity (250 mA),  300V inter-winding isolation and ¼ watt RF input power capability . The footprint is 4.19 x 4.55 mm, with a height of 3.05 mm.

The new AT392RAS air-core inductors allow operation in ambient temperatures as low as –60°C and up to 240°C. They are designed for VHF-UHF RF applications where aerospace/military-level performance is required, and appear with 5 inductance values from 8.1 to 27.3 nH. Q ratings are as high as 130, with current handling of up to 4 amps. Flat top and bottom provide reliable pick-and-place assembly.

Coilcraft AE619PYA Series are composite-core surface mount inductors for military and aerospace applications, such as driver circuitry, DC-DC converters, switching power supplies, power inverters, and filters. Soft saturation makes them ideal for voltage regulator module (VRM/VRD) applications.

The AE619PYA is offered in 10 inductance values ranging from 0.4 µH – 6.1 µH. Special composite core construction and larger gauge windings provide high current handling of up to 111 Amps. They provide a full-rated temperature range of -55° to +115°, DC resistance down to 0.70 mOhms, and self-shielded construction.

Coilcraft’s new XGL4030 Series of high-performance, molded power inductors offer up to 40% lower DCR than the previous best-in-class inductors as well as extremely low AC losses, resulting in the best overall efficiency over a wide range of AC ripple current. They are ideal for DC-DC converters with switching frequencies ranging from hundreds of kHz to 5 MHz and above.

The XGL4030 features an expanded inductance range, including 18 values from 0.13 to 12.0 µH, with current ratings up to 26.5 Amps and soft saturation characteristics. It also offers a 30% increase in Irms self-heating current, allowing the XGL4030 to operate much cooler than previous-generation components.

XGL4030 Series inductors are qualified to AEC-Q200 Grade 1 standards (-40° to +125°C ambient) with a maximum part operating temperature of +165°C and exhibit no thermal aging issues, making them suitable for automotive and other harsh-environment applications. They feature RoHS-compliant, tin-silver-over-copper terminations and are halogen free. Their composite construction also minimizes audible buzzing.

New Mini Air Core Inductors

The company also introduced high Q factors Air Core Inductors (Spring inductors) that have very tight inductance tolerances, designed for narrowband RF amplifier matching and tuning applications. The new 1512SP/2712SP Series of Mini Air Core Inductors (photo above) come with inductance values from 2.5 nH to 150 nH (tolerances as low as 2%). They include acrylic jacket to provide a flat top for pick and place and are available in two sizes: 4.45 × 3.94 × 3.15 mm and 6.86 × 4.45 × 3.15 mm.
